Road Safety is a global concern, more so in India, with the maximum number of fatalities taking place due to road crashes. In many such crashes, the victims get trapped in mangled vehicles requiring rescue from the scene. Their evacuation requires specialized training, equipment such as hydraulic cutters, spreaders, stabilizing devices, and techniques for vehicle extrication within the platinum 10 minutes. Towards this, a prototype Vehicle for Extrication and Emergency Rescue in Accidents (VEERA) was developed. This vehicle will augment the pioneering initiative of the Tamil Nadu Government, i.e., Innuyir Kappom Thittam (IKT), to improve road safety. Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP), jointly with CoERS organised the Road Safety Summit 2023 – Challenges in Enforcement and Trauma Care in Road Crashes on 13th September 2023 at IIT Madras.
