About RBG Labs

The Rehabilitation Bioengineering Group (RBG Labs) was established in 2006 at the Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, under the leadership of Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian. The lab applies a data-driven systems approach across road safety in India, human factors engineering, driver behavior analysis, lean manufacturing, and transport policy support. Over the years, it has grown into a national reference centre for evidence-based innovation and capacity building in transport and safety systems.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), RBG Labs developed the electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR/iRAD), India’s first national crash database, now deployed across all 36 States and Union Territories. The lab also anchors the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS), integrating research in human factors, road engineering, and vehicle safety to strengthen systemic outcomes.

Summary of RBG Labs' activities

RBG Labs works at the intersection of research, innovation, and transport policy, with activities spanning five domains:

Reduction in Accident Fatalities in TAEI-Covered Zones

Since the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI), accident fatalities reduced by 24% in 2018 compared to 2017, demonstrating measurable impact in road accident prevention and trauma care improvement.

Number of First Responders Trained

TAEI has trained first responders in more than 50 accident hotspots across Tamil Nadu, including Vellore, Trichy, and Madurai, enhancing emergency medical response and road safety outcomes.

Nationwide Implementation of eDAR/iRAD

eDAR (formerly iRAD) is implemented across all 36 States and Union Territories, capturing detailed accident data nationwide, supporting data-driven road safety initiatives and transport safety analysis in India.

Improvements in Response Time and Road Safety Indicators

TAEI introduced standardized trauma care protocols and time norms for patient care, leading to faster response times and improved emergency trauma management.

Journey of RBG Labs

The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at RBG Labs, IIT Madras is funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, to perform evidence-based integrated approach to Road Safety. CoERS works on various aspects of human factors engineering, road engineering and vehicle engineering to bring about significant improvements in road safety globally. CoERS also advises various stakeholders and Governments to bring about a data-driven systems approach to road safety. They work on several projects that apply design thinking methodologies to develop innovative systems towards safe roads, data-driven interventions in road safety and new product developments for driver health performance and behaviour monitoring.
