Road Safety Audit

International research and statistical inferences have substantiated that roads are the pivot point of any traffic crash. During the design of any road major safety parameters are considered, but a few features with less priority may go unidentified such as markings, traffic calming measures, signages which maybe a contributing factor of crash. Furthermore, a systematic Road Safety Audit must be periodically done to improve the deteriorating existing road infrastructure.

What is a Road Safety Audit?

A Road Safety Audit is “A formal, systematic, and detailed examination of a road project by an independent and qualified team of auditors that leads to a report of the potential safety concerns in the project,” as per IRC. Road Safety Audit in Indian Context is currently guided by Indian Road Congress Manual, IRC SP:88- 2019 (Manual on Road Safety Audit). It provides a step-by-step protocol and various checklists to perform RSA at five different stages of a road project. The outcome of RSA is a road safety audit report that identifies road safety issues and makes recommendations to improve safety.

Why Road Safety Audit?

Road Safety Audit (RSA) highlights the safety issues and makes recommendations to minimise the effect of each issues. While it won’t always make new designs completely “safe,” but it puts safety high on the decision-making agenda and cause deliberate actions to be taken based on recommendations. RSA is proactive in nature aimed at detecting potential safety hazards to prevent crashes.

Our Approach and Methodology

Using digital technology and data-driven insights, the conventional approach of RSA has been improved. Our RSA application is a digitalised tool which is designed to enhance the precision and efficacy of safety assessment in a detailed manner. The application enables the auditors to capture real-time data in a single platform, highlight critical observations and provide recommendations through audit reports.

Our Objectives

  • Standardisation of audit process to ensure consistency and accuracy in data collection.
  • Centralised repository for all the audits, allowing for future comparisons or references.
  • Utilising data analytics for data-driven decision making to enhance safety performance.
  • Enhanced workflow management by role-based access control for better credibility and transparency.
