In a road crash, about 50% of mortality could occur in the first 10 minutes of injury, especially if it is to the head, spinal cord, cardiac ruptures, or any damage to the major blood vessels or airway obstruction. Immediate medical intervention within platinum 10 minutes and definitive treatment within the golden hour can greatly influence the injured victim’s chances of survival and recovery.
Towards this goal, the Government of India is working on identifying the upgradation needs of trauma centres and clinics in the vicinity of High Frequency Accident Zones (HFAZ). Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT Madras developed a baseline checklist to map the status of trauma centres and evaluate their preparedness. In addition, a series of capacity-building workshops on applying this baseline survey was conducted by CoERS from December 21, 2023 to January 25, 2024. Demonstration of this application and various salient features of the Baseline Survey App was shared in the program. Healthcare professionals from various districts in Haryana participated in creating a Baseline Survey form for Trauma centres through the Baseline Survey Application
The workshop commenced on December 21, 2023 with Panchkula, followed by Gurgaon, Jind, Panipat, Sirsa, Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Sonipat, Hisar, Fatehabad, Kaithal, Palwal and Nuh. A 5E approach emphasizing the human factor (Empathy) was explicated in the workshop to simplify the process and upskill the people to strengthen the present status of trauma care in the State. The government of Haryana has implemented this baseline survey across all the hospitals and trauma centres in the State to identify their preparedness across all levels of hospitals.
As of April 12, 2024, 850 hospitals were registered in the Baseline Survey. Each hospital was provided with their unique login credentials sent to their registered email ID to access the App and complete the baseline survey. Over 100 hospitals have completed their baseline survey and 75 are in progress. A dedicated support and feedback line has been established via phone and email. Over 150 calls have been made by Healthcare professionals in Haryana to get their queries and issues clarified related to the baseline survey. As we advance, our activities shall be towards supporting the rest of the hospitals to complete their baseline and provide a trauma care preparedness score.
