Activity-Based Learning for Training of Master Trainers

In India, 4,12,432 accidents took place in 2021 in which 1,53,972 had to lose their life as per MoRTH accident report 2021. We can see the increasing trend in accident severity every year, in India persons killed per 100 accidents was 29 in 2015 which has shown an increasing trend and now has reached up to 37.3 in 2021. This shows that more serious accidents are happening on the Indian roads with each passing year. It is needed to educate everyone that road safety should not be taken lightly, as it is a matter of life and death.

The main reason behind the education system is to prepare the students for life. Lot of efforts are made to reduce the road crashes but without proper road safety education all could be in vain.

Road Safety cannot be solely taught through books, it needs a practical approach too. Road Safety Education is a life skill which should be taught using a good curriculum and pedagogy designed as per the age of the student.  However, a well trained teacher and the right method of education is required.

The aim of training Master Trainers is to help and deepen the knowledge of the teacher on how to educate the students on road safety using more activity-based techniques.

Objectives of the training

  1. To strengthen the knowledge of the teachers on Road safety.
  1. To explore possible strategies that a teacher may incorporate while teaching the students.
  1. To promote and facilitate the teachers for activity-based learning in Road Safety Education.
  1. To sensitize the teachers about road safety issues.
  1. To inform the teachers about their role in saving the life of their students on the road – now and in the future.
  1. The programme will equip the teachers with age-wise pedagogy strategies, which will help them to ensure that all the students are learning about Road Safety.

How to introduce Road Safety in Schools

a) Capacity improvement of Teachers – Train the teacher’s program so that further the students can be taught on road safety by the trained teachers. Introducing curriculum and Pedagogy.

b) Course content- Designing of the road safety teaching process by the teachers. Use of Blooms Taxonomy by the teachers to teach road safety.

c) Measuring the learning outcomes- through test, exams, contest etc.

Through the trained teachers, Road Safety Education can go to the students and through students it can go to the whole society.

The idea behind training teachers is to reduce the burden content of the students and to use different methods of teaching. By introducing different teaching techniques which can be used.

Teachers’ Training on Road Safety Education

A teacher should understand that road safety is not only a subject but a lifestyle. As the driver’s fault is the cause behind most of the accidents, it is very important to teach future drivers about road safety. Also, since a child is born, roads play a crucial role in commuting. It is important to introduce Road Safety from a very early state in order to avoid any mis happening on the roads. Road safety is a sensitive issue and teachers should be very careful when introducing Road Safety Education to students. The activities and the teachings should be as per the age and catching power of the children.
