Cops to pinpoint reason of accidents

Everytime an accident happens, the person who drove the bigger vehicle is booked for causing the accident. This also helps the victims to get compensation from insurance firms.

Everytime an accident happens, the person who drove the bigger vehicle is booked for causing the accident. This also helps the victims to get compensation from insurance firms.

The flipside associated with this victim-accused framework is that we don’t get to know what actually caused the road accident. The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) is trying to change this and find out the actual cause of accidents through a structured approach.

Centre of excellence for road safety (CoERS), IIT Madras, on Wednesday organized a training programme for GTCP’s traffic investigation wing on how to use root cause analysis matrix (RCAM), a crash investigation tool, developed by the institute’s engineering design department. This is the first time in the country, traffic cops are trained in traffic investigation using this approach.

“The tool will help traffic police collate data from the accident spot and interpret it without an expert’s help. RCAM, which works on the 3M&E (man, machine, method and environment) model, will identify what was the real precipitating factor which caused the accident,” said professor Venkatesh Balasubramanian, head CoERS, IITM.
