Training Programme on Human Factors Based Road Safety Audit

June 19

About the Programme

The Training Programme on Human Factors Based Road Safety Audit, conducted by the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS), IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Highways Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, is designed to strengthen the capacity of highway engineers and field officers to systematically identify road safety risks, conduct evidence-based assessments, and implement targeted interventions. The programme will bring together Superintending Engineers and Road Safety field engineers from priority districts across Tamil Nadu, under the Data-Driven Hyperlocal Interventions (DDHI) programme.

The training will introduce participants to road safety risk identification from a human factors perspective and provide hands-on training in conducting systematic audits using the Road Safety Survey & Audit (RSSA) Application, a digital platform developed by CoERS to streamline and digitise the audit process.

A key highlight of the programme will be the release of the “High Frequency Accident Zones in Tamil Nadu 2025” report by the Hon’ble Minister. The report presents a comprehensive analysis of road safety in Tamil Nadu using iRAD/eDAR data, covering Blackspots, Obdurate Blackspots, district-wise prioritisation of Blackspots, and Top Order Grids, offering critical insights to support stakeholders in identifying high-risk locations and planning data-driven interventions.

As part of DDHI’s train-and-transfer approach, the programme will equip government officials with the knowledge, tools, and processes required to independently identify risks, prioritise interventions, and implement evidence-based road safety solutions. By strengthening district-level institutional capacity, the initiative aims to support sustained reductions in road crashes, injuries, and fatalities across Tamil Nadu.
